Leopard 2 design
Externally, the Leopard 2 was less innovative compared to the Leopard 1. The chassis has been improved, but with a focus on protection from the start, it remained largely the same. The most obvious difference therefore lay in the turret, which was adapted not only for the new Rheinmetall 120 mm smoothbore gun, but also for an additional composite armor compartment. Estimated protection figures (up to 2A5) are 590-690 RHAe for the turret and 600 RHAe for the frontal armor and underhull.
Mobility: MTU engine
The heart of the Leopard 2 is the MTU MB 873 Ka-501 diesel engine. This powerful unit delivers 1,500 PS (1,103 kW) at 2600 rpm and the block is a 4-stroke, 47.6 liter, 12-cylinder multi-fuel. Its exhaust is turbocharged and liquid cooled. Estimated fuel consumption is around 300 liters for an average of 100 km on flat ground, compared to 500 liters for the same distance cross-country. The transmission is a Renk HSWL 354 hydrokinetic planetary gearbox with four forward and two reverse gears. This automatic transmission has a torque converter. Therefore, whatever the speed, the leopard could turn on the fly. This transmission automatically changes gears within a range pre-selected by the driver. The cooling air outlet grille protrudes above the rear plate and is strengthened and better protected from the 28th production vehicle onwards. In addition, an automatic fault detection system detects technical glitches and is monitored in real time by the driver.
chassis and hull
According to data from the Entwicklung series, the windshield measures 50 mm at 15° and 35 mm at 8°, which corresponds to 90 mm in welded steel RHA with a hardened top layer. The underside of the beak was 59 mm at 35°. The lower front plate (beak to turret rear) was 19 mm, under the engine compartment was 14 mm, the rear plate was 25 mm thick at 15-20°. The engine deck is 20mm thick. Overall, this wasn't better than that of the Leopard 1 chassis, but the compartment above the main drivetrain received a new cofferdam for the composite armored storage bay, where all tools were secured before. The Leopard is flattened rather than slanted. Externally. The driver is on your right. He is given a sliding hatch (on the right) and his three periscope vision blocks in front of him.
