California Governor Gavin Newsom has promised to empower individuals to enforce the state's ban on the manufacture and sale of assault weapons, citing the same conservative Texas lawmakers who claim to ban most abortions after six weeks of gestation.
"We will work to ensure that individuals can sue anyone who makes, distributes or sells offensive weapons, kits or parts for ghost weapons in California," said a statement from the governor's office on Sunday.
California has banned the production and sale of various assault weapons for three decades. In June, however, much to the ire of Democrats and gun control activists, a federal judge lifted the ban, stating, “Like the Swiss Army Knife, the popular AR-15 rifle is the perfect weapon combination for home and national defense. Equipment. Suitable for both home and combat.
The California ban remained in place pending the state appeal.
The Newsom movement is inspired by a controversial Texan law that allows individuals to enforce the ban on abortion after detection of the earliest fetal heart activity, giving them the right to sue abortion clinics and anyone who "helps and incites" the process.
Last Friday, the US Supreme Court ruled that abortion providers in Texas could sue the state to ban most abortions, but allowed the law, the toughest of its kind in the US to date, to stay in place, which one did liberal-minded court sparked outrage. Minority and among the supporters of choice.
Newsom condemned the decision, saying, "I am outraged by yesterday's US Supreme Court decision to keep the ban on most abortion services in Texas in place ... then California will use its powers to protect people's lives while." Texas used them to harm women. "
The governor added that he had directed his staff to work with California lawmakers and its Democratic attorney general to pass laws that would allow individuals to enforce the California prohibition on assault weapons.
Newsom said those who sue could win up to $ 10,000 for a violation, plus other costs and attorney's fees.
The Newsom Declaration is a fulfilled prophecy for some gun rights groups who predicted that progressive states would try to use Texas' abortion laws to restrict access to guns.
